Do you want to research your Italian family history? Research your Italian genealogy online using the many resources out there can make the process both exciting and daunting. In the last few years I’ve successfully navigated the online genealogy and family history resources to make some incredible discoveries about my own family. In doing so, I’ve narrowed down the resources to those I’ve found to be most fruitful. My annotated list is below. Some of the resources are specific to Italian research, but all the others may be useful for any nationality. Happy researching! Buona ricerca!

ONLINE RESOURCES FOR FINDING ITALIAN FAMILY HISTORY

    • Free social media website and smartphone app.
    • Facebook groups can be very helpful for family history research. Look for these types of groups: Italian genealogy; Region-specific Italian genealogy (e.g., Sicily, Naples, etc.); Italian and region-specific general interest groups; Affinity groups for ancestral hometowns.
  • flold3.com ̶  https://www.fold3.com/
    • Subscription database of American and international military records. Affiliated with Ancestry.com.
  • newspapers.com ̶  https://www.newspapers.com/
    • Subscription database of 21,600+ newspapers from the 1700s–2000s. Affiliated with Ancestry.com.
  • Wikipedia ̶  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page
    • Free online encyclopedia. NOTE: Because Wikipedia can be edited by anyone, its articles are not always reliable. However, the “References” section at the end of each article contains links to outside sources that are generally more reliable and can be very helpful for research about Italian hometowns and other related topics.
