The Ghirardellis: My Mother’s Family
January 21 @ 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM
Sidney Lawrence, artist, writer, curator & longtime museum official (now retired)
Cenacolista Sidney Lawrence, a San Francisco native based in Washington DC, is a Ghirardelli family member through his late mother Polly. Lawrence earned art history degrees at UC Berkeley and UC Davis. From 1975 to 2003, he was Public Information Officer for the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, DC. He is also an artist, art writer and exhibit curator. In 1999, he organized a multigenerational Ghirardelli Family show for the Museo Italo Americano in Fort Mason. This was followed, in 2002, by his in-depth article on the Ghirardellis for California History: The Magazine of the California Historical Society.
With snapshots, vintage photos, ad art, real art, factory views and other visuals, Lawrence will offer a generationally freewheeling examination of the ups, downs, pains, pleasures and accomplishments of the Ghirardellis, from the entrepreneurial ‘49er patriarch Domingo of Liguria who arrived via Peru to his mother’s generation of San Franciscans, who witnessed the decline and sale of a family stalwart. The subsequent success of Ghirardelli Square and the chocolate brand, and the inside family story, will also be discussed.
