Speaker 5/6/21
“San Francisco: City on the Rocks”

May 6 @ 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM

Introduction to Il Cenacolo’s May 2021 Speaker Series
by Monthly Chair, Don Zingale

Significant socio-cultural issues, complicated by political and economic pressure and a world-wide pandemic, defy simple solutions.

At first glance, our May 2021 speaker list appears to be an eclectic mix of interesting experts specializing in very different arenas. But a closer examination will find a broad cross section of San Francisco Bay Area professionals with a common thread of purpose aimed at examining how best to navigate these unusual times.

Over this month, we will examine subjects as diverse as innovations for student success at one of the Bay Area’s small universities, social and criminal justice locally and nationally, seagoing humanitarian efforts on a global scale and a Native Son’s current look at our “City by the Bay.” What I trust we will come away with is a deeper understanding of how contemporary problem-solving is far more complex than “yea or nay.” And yet, we can still make a difference.

Carl Nolte, Journalist and Native Son
“San Francisco: City on the Rocks”

Carl Nolte is a fourth-generation San Franciscan. His long tenure at the San Francisco Chronicle started in 1961 where his primary responsibilities have included service as a general assignment reporter. He has covered San Francisco and the West and has been an editor and war correspondent. His weekly column called “Native Son” is a favorite of many folks throughout Northern California.

Carl is the recipient of many awards including the Maritime Heritage Award from the San Francisco Maritime National Park Association, 2010; the President’s Medal, California Maritime Academy, 2011; and the President’s Medal for Public Service, University of San Francisco, 2000.

San Francisco’s Native Son returns to Il Cenacolo to share his views on the major issues facing our City and what we can do about them. In particular, among the current challenges is a core of the central city that has become what is best described as a “ghost town.”

Spend some time with Carl. He has been around and has a lot to say.
