Speaker 5/13/21
“Humanitarian Disaster Relief: A Maritime Perspective”

May 13 @ 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM

Introduction to Il Cenacolo’s May 2021 Speaker Series
by Monthly Chair, Don Zingale

Significant socio-cultural issues, complicated by political and economic pressure and a world-wide pandemic, defy simple solutions.

At first glance, our May 2021 speaker list appears to be an eclectic mix of interesting experts specializing in very different arenas. But a closer examination will find a broad cross section of San Francisco Bay Area professionals with a common thread of purpose aimed at examining how best to navigate these unusual times.

Over this month, we will examine subjects as diverse as innovations for student success at one of the Bay Area’s small universities, social and criminal justice locally and nationally, seagoing humanitarian efforts on a global scale and a Native Son’s current look at our “City by the Bay.” What I trust we will come away with is a deeper understanding of how contemporary problem-solving is far more complex than “yea or nay.” And yet, we can still make a difference.

Stephen J. Kreta, P.E.
Professor Emeritus, California State University Maritime Academy
“Humanitarian Disaster Relief: A Maritime Perspective”

Hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunamis, wildfires, drought, and other natural–as well as man-made–disasters cause hunger, homelessness, and medical emergencies worldwide. Many of these disasters require long-term and sustained disaster relief, including the delivery of medicine, food, clean drinking water, clothing, and shelter. These events are seemingly more common and more catastrophic, with no reason to believe we have seen the last of them.

Steve’s presentation will highlight the role maritime organizations have played in recent tragedies, as well as how government, private, and educational organizations–specifically the California State University Maritime Academy–are responding to the call to help.

Steve Kreta is Professor Emeritus at California State University Maritime Academy in Vallejo (Cal Maritime) in the Department of Engineering, and currently teaches courses in Steam Power Plant Simulation. He retired after serving for 35 years as Vice President for Student Affairs, Associate Vice-President for Academic Affairs, Academic Dean, Department Chair and Professor of Engineering and Technology. Prior to starting at Cal Maritime, Steve served as Engineering Officer on US Merchant Marine vessels including oil tankers, container ships and break-bulk freighters.

Steve holds several degrees and licenses: a BS degree in Marine Engineering Technology, an MS in Industrial and Systems Engineering; Chief Engineer, Steam, Motor, and Gas Turbine Vessels, USCG; Professional Mechanical Engineer; and is also a Certified Plant Engineer.

He lives with his wife Angie in Walnut Creek, CA, and when not teaching spends time enjoying his 3-year-old grandson, creating products from used wine barrels, serving his church, and volunteering as Chair of the San Francisco Bay Committee of the International Orthodox Christian Charities.
