Surviving the Challenges to Viticulture

Speaker: Ross Cobb

Ross Cobb is the son of our President David A. Cobb, and owner of Cobb Wines in Occidental, CA, an enterprise he began with his parents. He has been involved in many wineries over the years and dedicated himself to the production of fine single-vineyard limited-production wines. He will talk about his winery and the estate vineyards, and discuss the major adjustments that have had to be made to survive recent challenges. Between the massive fires, the smoke and COVID, adjustments have had to be made quickly. In a major change for the winery, he pivoted the focus from servicing mainly restaurants to online shops and retail, as well as initiating a take-out program to help restaurants and wineries stay afloat.

Ross Cobb cut his teeth working for Ferrari Carano developing their soil science lab just after graduating the University of California at Santa Cruz. He then took the position at Williams Selyem as their viticulturist and enologist in the late nineties. He later joined Flowers Winery eventually becoming the head winemaker in 2004. Ross went on to become the inaugural winemaker at Hirsch Vineyards for multiple vintages before launching the brands Banshee and Reeve. In 2001, he began the family winery, Cobb Wines, with his parents, David and Diane.

Ross is known for championing a complex, cool-climate style of Pinot Noir that captures the sophistication of the varietal. His wines are electric, age-worthy and truly have a sense of place. He farms the estate himself and oversees the farming of all the other fruit sources. Only a small amount of single-vineyard designates is made, with production for the entire brand never exceeding 4000 cases. (More at
