Of Fisherman and Baseball: The Isola delle Femmine Sicilian Community of Northern California

October 6, 2022 @ 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM

The Isola delle Femmine Sicilian Community of Northern California
Join us for a panel presentation by three local historians from Friends of Isola Delle Femmine, Inc., a fellow Bay Area Italian club. The panel will present a history of the Sicilian settlement in Pittsburg, California, and will discuss how their community has prospered and continues to preserve its heritage. The Isola delle Femmine-Pittsburg connection goes back to the 1880’s, when the great grandfathers, grandfathers and fathers of the current community came to the area. Pittsburg and Isola delle Femmine are on the same parallel on the globe and have similar climates as well as the same abundance of fish for the fishermen. Pittsburg was a fishing port during the Isola migration. The area was originally known as New York Landing, then Black Diamond before becoming Pittsburg. The Friends of Isola Delle Femmine organization in Pittsburg, a large and active group, exists to preserve, protect, and promote the Italian-Sicilian cultural heritage among the descendants, immigrants, citizens and friends of Isola delle Femmine, Sicily and around the world. https://friendsofisoladellefemmine.org/
SPEAKERS
The speakers will be Frank Bruno, President and Co-Founder of Friends of Isole Delle Femmine, and historians and executive board members Alex Grillo and Vincent Ferrante. All three are descendants of immigrant fishermen from Isola delle Femmine.
