The Great Opera Houses of Italy
Bob Ryan, Cenacolista
Bob, an opera lover for over half a century, has attended operas with his wife Terri in some of the world’s most renowned opera houses, from Sidney and Melbourne, to the great ones in Europe, and back again to San Francisco, at a rate of 60 to 70 per year. Today, he will speak about the great opera houses of Italy, where it all began—in particular the fabled La Scala, Teatro Argentina, the Rome Opera, San Carlo in Naples and La Fenice in Venice. His presentation, illustrated with numerous images, will survey the artistic, cultural and historical influence of these great places and discuss some great events that took place in them. As a bonus he will introduce three of the many good friends he has made in the opera world.
Bob Ryan is a San Francisco native, and grew up in San Rafael. He has Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Physics, and an MBA. For nearly 30 years he worked as an accounting manager for a large telecommunications company, retiring in 2012. Soon after retirement, he joined Il Cenacolo, and has thoroughly enjoyed being part of this group. Bob is also interested in seafaring and maritime history, and in his travels has visited maritime museums throughout the world. In addition to opera, Bob and his wife Terri are chamber music lovers, and have sponsored numerous musicians and chamber concerts. They live walking-distance from the War Memorial Opera House–a conscious decision!
