How Petrarch and Boccaccio Radiated Italian Civilization throughout Medieval Europe – James Boitano, PhD

Jim Boitano will present an introduction to the major works of 14th-century Tuscan writers, Petrarch and Boccaccio. Each wrote in both Latin and the vernacular Florentine dialect and by doing so elevated Italy’s cultural influence on the development of Western civilization. He will discuss the pros and cons that these writers had to consider when choosing whether to write in Latin or the vernacular. Through their literary works, these two writers were influential in spreading the new ideas and values of Humanism into other areas of Italy and Western Europe where the masses were still largely illiterate or, if they were literate, were literate primarily in Latin.

Cenacolista James J. Boitano, Ph.D., our 2016 Man of the Year, past President of Il Cenacolo, is the author of our history and culture feature “Il Professore.” Jim was born and raised in Seattle, holds a BA from Seattle University, an MA in International Relations from the University of Denver, and a Ph.D. in Political Philosophy from the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. He taught for 36 years at Dominican College/University in San Rafael, California, where he served in a number of teaching and administrative positions. He retired in 2006 as Professor Emeritus of Political Science and Humanities, and Dean Emeritus of Arts and Sciences. Jim served on the Marin Symphony Board of Directors for 15 years, including two years as President (2005-07). He is now a member of the Symphony’s Emeritus Board. Jim is also a member of the Board of the Marin Music Chest, having also served for two years as Board President (2015-2017).
