Speaker Clara-Bargellini November 10, From Italy to Mexico in 1927

The Letters of Mexican poet Carlos Pellicer

The Mexican poet Carlos Pellicer spent a year in Italy in 1927-1928. He sent a series of letters to friends and family in Mexico which were found in his library after his death. They give a sensitive and also humorous view of major Italian places in those years as well as of historical personages he “met” through his imagination. Dr. Clara Bargellini published these letters in the 1980s and will share her review of them.

Dr. Bargellini was born in Florence, Italy, and received her undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania, with extended studies at the Faculty of Letters at the Universita degli Studi in Florence. She received her PhD in Art History from Harvard University, with her thesis on the beautiful mosaic floor of the Otranto Cathedral in Italy. At Harvard she met her future husband, who is Mexican, and ever since has specialized in the art history of Mexico. She has published nine seminal books and additional treatises, including the book about Carlos Pellicer’s Letters. Dr. Bargellini is currently a professor emeritus of Art History at the National University of Mexico where she has taught for more than 40 years.
