November 17: Laurence Kornfield
Laurence Kornfield served as a Chief Building Inspector in San Francisco for 20 years, and has been active in earthquake hazard mitigation, response and recovery since the Loma Pieta earthquake in 1989. He initiated and oversaw San Francisco's recently completed Community Action Plan for Seismic Safety (CAPSS), and is currently developing longterm implementation plans for that CAPSS project. Laurence Kornfield is active in policy development related to building performance, disability access, sustainability, and many other areas. He practices Aikido, sails, cooks, and highly recommends the foie gras at Salt House restaurant. He is married to Catherine Bauman, a former San Francisco City Planner.
He will speak about the coming San Francisco earthquakes which will have enormous impacts on San Francisco, impacts that are generally predictable. Many of the most severe of those impacts can be reduced through relatively simple and low-cost actions, and by planning now for earthquake recovery. With our current knowledge and with your help, San Francisco can become a city with a high degree of earthquake resilience, allowing life and business to resume quickly.
