The New East Spans of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridgewhy was a necessary replacement: How did the process evolve in choosing the new design? What is now being constructed? Ephraim Hirsch was a member of the Engineering Design Advisory Panel (EDAP) that helped select and recommend the design to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). Construction is now well under way and recent construction photos will be presented.

Ephraim Hirsch, Cenacolista, is a native San Franciscan, attended Polytechnic High School, the University of California (BS '53, MS '55, both in Civil/Structural Engineering), and was a 1960 Fulbright Scholar in Rome, studying with Pier Luigi Nervi. He is a consulting structural engineer in his own practice since 1964. He is a Fellow of both the Structural Engineers Association of California and the American Society of Civil engineers, was a past president of the San Francisco Building Commission, and currently serves on the Design Review Board of the Bay Conservation and Development Commission. He is married to Diane Filippi, Director of the SPUR Urban Center.
