Carl Nolte: "I'll bet you 50 cents that anybody who has lived here for more than six months has become convinced that the city of San Francisco is going to hell. What's the saying? San Francisco was perfect the day I got here. Even new people say that. I take the opposite view. Despite all the problems--beggars, stalled city government, you name it; these are the good old days. San Francisco continues to be a great place. Howz that?"

Carl Nolte is a reporter and sometime columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle. He's covered all kinds of things in 30 years as a reporter and 18 as an editor. His reporting assignments have ranged from three baseball World Series to two wars--the Gulf War in 1991 and the invasion of Iraq in 2003. Mostly he covers California and the west, and since late 2008 has written a Sunday column about San Francisco called "Native Son."
